Eat Foods That Fight Skin Cancer

By Sherry L. Granader

The most common forms of non-melanoma skin cancer are basal cell and squamous cell affecting more than one million people per year. The good news is they can be easily removed with various outpatient procedures. Melanoma is a much more serious problem affecting fewer proplr, however, it can spread to other organs and appear anywhere on the body, not just those parts exposed to the sun.

Your risk is higher is you are Caucasian, older than 20 years of age, have fair skin, light-colored eyes, freckles or sunburn easily. New research is showing that women who are taking Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) are twice as likely to develop melanoma. Other risks include a history of using tanning beds, family history, a weakened immune system, fragile skin and frequent exposure to industrial chemicals.

What can you do? Eat foods that fight skin cancer.

1. Eat cooked tomatoes, lots of color fruits and vegetables, leafy greens, fatty fish like samon and dark chocolate. These foods contain antioxidants and give your skin a protective edge.

2. Take a fish oil supplement daily - 1,000 mg. of Omega 3's which are essential fatty acids and help protect your skin.

3. Keep your blood sugar levels normal by avoiding white bread, white rice, and highly processed foods including refined sugar products. There is a link between high blood sugar and an increased risk of malignant melanoma.

4. Reduce your intake of saturated fats like butter, cheese and red meats. Instead use olive oil, low-fat cheeses and choose fish or chicken instead of red meat.

5. Are you taking Vitamin D3? The sunshine Vitamin? Women need between 200-1,000 IU of Vitamin D3 daily which can help prevent the development and spread of cancers. You can take a supplement or eat salmon, tuna and look for fortified drinks. The easiest thing to do is to take a Vitamin D3 supplement daily to make sure you are getting enough of this very important, often underrated vitamin.

Finally, make a point of exercising every single day. Our bodies are meant to move and exercise will help build your immune system, reduce inflammation throughout your body and encourage problem cells to self-destruct. People who are obese are at a higher risk for all types of cancer so make exercise a priority in your life.
